Although the book itself was rather large and intimidating, I found the   Singer Samurai shirt  fascinating, well organized and easy to read. Ms. Flanders does a thorough and entertaining job of illustrating/describing happenings in the daily lives of middle to upper class Victorian families. The book contains numerous illustrations and footnotes. I generally avoid footnotes as I find them distracting, but in this instance they enhanced each page and were pleasant to read. Victorian times may be glamourized in novels and movies but Ms. Flander's book illustrates just how difficult and unhygienic the times really were. Bill Bryson referenced it in his excellent At Home, and I'm glad I was able to find a copy at my local library. Although, I must say, as the book focused on the home it also focused on the lives of Victorian women, and that was somewhat depressing/shocking. Sure, everyone knows women couldn't own property or have custody of their children after a divorce, but who realizes that they weren't supposed to tell their husbands when their children were sick or eat spicy foods? And one really has to feel bad for the children who were dressed in what sounds like 70 pounds of clothes and supposed to be mostly segregated from their parents. Throughout this book, I felt like I was with her, uncovering one stone, then the next. This is a beautiful account of her journey to understand her origins and also explore the ethical dilemma of donor-conceived children. It’s a beautiful, interesting book. I loved it.This is by far one of the best memoir's I've read. Dani Shapiro is a master memoirist. As a mother who used a sperm donor to have a child, her story was poignant and exciting. I listened to her read it on Audible and it was exciting to hear the Hebrew and words in her own voice.
